The Art of Remembering

Weddings

There are moments in my career when I stop and think, I can’t believe this is what I get to do.

Every weekend, I am invited into one of the most meaningful days of someone’s life. A day they’ve dreamed about for years. A day that has been anticipated, prayed for, planned for, and celebrated long before it ever arrives. Out of all the ways I could spend my weekends, I get to spend them documenting love stories, witnessing family legacies, and preserving memories that will only become more valuable with time.

it’s a privilege that never feels ordinary

As a wedding photographer, I have a front-row seat to moments most people don’t notice. The deep breath before a bride walks down the aisle. The way a father looks at his daughter when he realizes this chapter is coming to a close. The tears held back during vows. The embrace between grandparents. The laughter shared between lifelong friends. These moments happen quickly, often passing unnoticed in the busyness of the day, but they are the moments that tell the story.

The longer I photograph weddings, the more I realize that photography is about so much more than documenting what happened. It is about preserving what it felt like.

A wedding day moves quickly. Months and sometimes years of planning unfold in a matter of hours. The flowers are arranged, the guests arrive, vows are exchanged, dinner is served, and before anyone is ready, the day is over. What remains are the memories. And memories, as beautiful as they are, have a way of softening around the edges over time.

that’s what makes photographs so powerful

A photograph has the ability to transport you back to a moment you thought you had forgotten. It reminds you not only what a day looked like, but what it felt like to be there. The excitement, the anticipation, the overwhelming joy, the gratitude of being surrounded by people you love. Years later, a single image can bring all of those emotions rushing back in an instant.

what continues to amaze me is how the meaning of photographs grows over time

When a gallery is first delivered, couples often fall in love with the portraits, the details, and the big moments they remember so clearly. But years later, the images that become the most treasured are often the ones they never expected. The candid photograph of a grandparent. A hug from a parent. Friends gathered together on the dance floor. Small moments that felt ordinary at the time but later become priceless because they can never be recreated.

The reality is that weddings are about so much more than two people getting married. They are one of the rare moments in life when generations come together in the same room. Family histories, friendships, traditions, and stories all intersect for a single day. There is something deeply meaningful about preserving those connections because life continues to move forward. People grow older. Families change. Seasons come and go.

the photographs remain

I often think about how the images I create today will be viewed decades from now. They will live in albums, hang on walls, and be passed down to future generations. Children and grandchildren will look through them one day and see not only what a wedding looked like, but who their family was. They will see the people who loved them before they were even born. They will see relationships, personalities, and moments that might otherwise have been lost to time.

that responsibility is not lost on me

Photography, at its core, is the art of remembering. It is preserving the people, places, emotions, and stories that make up a life. It allows us to hold onto moments long after they have passed and revisit them whenever we need to.

Every wedding I photograph reminds me how fleeting life can be and how important it is to document it well. It reminds me that behind every timeline, every carefully chosen detail, and every beautiful celebration is something much deeper: people who love each other and want to remember this chapter forever. Honestly, I am still blown away that I get to spend my weekends preserving that for others.
